Gypsy (band)
Gypsy was an American progressive rock band that had a few hits in the early 1970s.
Band history
1964 James Johnson (guitar), Doni Larson (bass) and Tom Green (drums) founded in Minneapolis band The Under Beats . With the other member Enrico Rosenbaum (vocals, guitar) they were quite successful in the Twin Cities area ; her hits included Footstompinʼ , Annie Do the Dog and Book of Love .
When Johnson began his military service in 1969, James "Owl" Walsh (keyboards) came as a replacement. After his time in the military, Johnson returned to the band, which now appeared as a quintet. They went to Los Angeles , where they became the house band of Whiskey a Go Go , and now called themselves "Gypsy". Their music changed towards progressive rock; they have often been compared to the band Santana .
Jay Epstein joined Green as a drummer. In 1970 her debut album Gypsy was released with the hits Gypsy Queen and Dead and Gone . By 1973 three more albums by the group came on the market, with the line-up changed several times. Then the band broke up.
In 1977 there was a short reunion that played at the “Super Jam '77” in St. Louis . In 1978 Walsh appeared with a new band he called "The James Walsh Gypsy Band".
