The Häfeli DH-5 was a double-decker fighter aircraft designed by the Swiss designer August Haefeli .

history

The construction of the prototype on the basis of a specification of the EMD began in 1918 in the Federal Construction Workshop , Flight Department in Thun . In March 1919, the test flights of the type began, which was designed as a reconnaissance and training aircraft for the Swiss air force. In May of the following year, the troops began testing. After solving some engine problems, the aircraft was released for series production.

The LFW I from the Winterthur locomotive factory was used as the first engine . 39 aircraft of this first series were procured and used from 1922. 20 more aircraft followed from 1924 as a second series with the somewhat more powerful LFW II engine. A single aircraft (No. 461) was built in 1924 with a somewhat more powerful 300 hp Hispano-Suiza engine. The flight performance improved as a result, but no more engines could be procured. In 1929 another series of 20 aircraft with the LFW III engine was built.

In 1929, Airplane No. 416 in Great Britain was fitted with a split wing at Handley-Page . For the international flight , the aircraft had the civil registration CH-136. In Switzerland, another 23 of the remaining first series aircraft received such a system in 1930. 18 aircraft of the second series were also equipped with the slat, as well as all aircraft of the third series shortly after their commissioning.

After a demonstration of an aerial target by Ernst Udet in March 1930, the aircraft of the third series were equipped in such a way that they could be equipped with an exchangeable target towing device.

Whereabouts

Since none of the aircraft was preserved, the project of a replica was started for the Museum of the Swiss Air Force .
