The hand-holding is a known in many cultures expression of affection between two people. As a special form of body contact , it can be part of so-called non - verbal communication . The importance and acceptance of holding hands, especially in public, varies depending on the culture .

It has to be distinguished from the greeting ritual of shaking hands .

Forms of expression and special features

Holding hands is often the first physical intimacy among lovers that is shown in public . The mutual touch of the partners is thus one of the expressions of love .

Until the 1960s, holding hands in public was largely not accepted in Western culture, which changed in the following decades. According to the Cora Romance Report 2002 , in which 6,600 women and men from 20 countries were asked about their opinion about sex in public , 78 percent of those questioned said that kissing and holding hands in public were largely accepted.

Even among seniors, holding hands is a recognized proof of love. According to a survey commissioned by the magazine “Lenz”, 65 percent of the senior citizens questioned see holding hands in public as a permitted form of expression of love.

Holding a victim's hand is recommended by medical professionals for first aid to make the injured person feel like they are not alone. However, immediate life-saving measures should never be forgotten.

Holding the hand of a dying person is part of what is known as terminal care , since in certain cases the dying can still perceive and feel their surroundings. The physical contact between the dying person and the person accompanying them can give comfort and make the situation more bearable for the dying person.

In the form of being held by the hand , it is used to protect children by an adult, e.g. B. in road traffic. In many countries, this gesture is therefore used as a sign to mark pedestrian paths.

Hand in hand , many people briefly connect symbolically to form a human chain in order to affirm a common political goal, to make it publicly effective, or they hold hands symbolically to point out distant places of danger that, without this visualization, get out of sight, sometimes across borders.
