Håkøya is an island in Norway and belongs to the municipality of Tromsø in the Norwegian province of Troms og Finnmark .
It lies west of Tromsø and east of Kvaløya in Sandnessundet . The small island of Stor-Duken is located northwest of Håkøya , Store Grindøya to the southeast and Litje Grindøya to the south . Håkøya extends from northeast to southwest over about 3.0 kilometers with a width of up to about 2.5 kilometers. Its area is 3.69 km² and it reaches a height of 105 meters in Skjellstonghaugen. From its western tip there is a connection to the large island of Kvaløya via the 330-meter-long Håkøybrua bridge . Håkøya is forested, with houses, cottages and farms on the coast.
During the Second World War , the German battleship Tirpitz was located south of Håkøya, between Håkøya and Store Grindøya, from October 1944 , where it was sunk on November 12, 1944. To commemorate the sinking and the people who died in it, a memorial was erected on Håkøya. The underwater remains of the wreck are registered as a cultural monument. On the southern shore of the island there is a bomb crater that was created during the attack on the Tirpitz and is about 20 meters in diameter and filled with water, which is also listed as a memorial.
