Store Grindøya
Store Grindøya , also known as Grindøya , is an uninhabited island in Norway and belongs to the municipality of Tromsø in the Norwegian province of Troms og Finnmark .
It is located southwest of Tromsø and east of Kvaløya in Sandnessundet . To the west is the small island Litje Grindøya , north of Håkøya . Store Grindøya extends from north to south for about 1.8 kilometers with a width of up to about 500 meters. The island is forested and reaches a height of up to 14.5 meters. It belongs to the area of the nature reserve Grindøysundet nature reserve and is home to many especially water birds such as eider , long-tailed duck and velvet scoter .
The name of the island is said to go back to the Norwegian grindgang and mean something like enclosure. It is a reference to the livestock farming practiced on the island from the 18th century. During the Second World War , the German battleship Tirpitz lay between Store Grindøya and Håkøya from October 1944 , where it was sunk on November 12, 1944.
