Hotel de Ville in Aix-en-Provence

The Hôtel de Ville in Aix-en-Provence is the city's town hall , built in the 17th century . It is located on the west side of the Rathausplatz in the old town. The facade in the style of the Italian Baroque has carved portals and wrought iron balcony grilles. The paved inner courtyard is separated from the square by an artistically forged gate. A monumental double staircase leads to the Salle des États de Provence , richly decorated with portraits , where the Aix City Council meets.

history

The structure was built by Pierre Pavillon from 1655 to 1671 .

The town hall was badly damaged during the French Revolution .

The Bibliothèque Méjanes , one of the most important collections in France with around 300,000 volumes, was on the ground floor until the Cité du Livre was built at the end of the 20th century .
