Höfði [ ˈhœvðɪ ] is the guest house in the Icelandic capital Reykjavík .

history

The building was built in 1909 on behalf of the French government for their consul Jean Paul Brillouin. The next owner was the poet Einar Benediktsson from 1913 to 1925 . A statue depicting Einar, created in 1964 by Ásmundur Sveinsson , has stood next to the building since 2015. The painter Louisa Matthíasdóttir lived in the house as a girl from 1925 to 1935 . Another resident was the British ambassador from 1938 to 1952, who a.o. during the Second World War . a. Winston Churchill and Marlene Dietrich were guests. In 1958 the city of Reykjavík bought the house.

A summit meeting ( "The Reykjavik Summit" ) between US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev took place in the building from October 10th to 12th, 1986 , which led to the end of the Cold War .
