Charlemagne divided the empire into Gaue , the Gaue into hundreds and lordships, at the head of which was the " Honne ". So Hönningen was the place where the Honne lived with his clan.

history

In 1436, Hönningen is listed for the first time in a document:

  • I designation court of manorial knowledge
  • XII district north of the Sieg, rule Wildenburg

Hönningen may have been settled earlier, since in 1048 the description of the Haiger parish lists the border at Scheuerfeld, which is only a few kilometers away.

Settlement

Hönningen is located in a cleared area at approx. 300 m above sea level. The soil consists of greywacke and slate that is only weathered to a shallow depth. In addition, most of the precipitation - an average of 950 mm per year - falls in the summer months. This favored the use of grassland and thus animal husbandry. As a result, most of the residents were farmers. Nearby there was the access route via Morsbach to the Brabant - Leipzig highway and the Hileweg from Betzdorf via Katzwinkel into the Wildenburger Land. The water supply was secured by a spring in the valley cut through the middle of the village.

Land and land belonged to the king since Clovis I. He introduced fiefdom by enfeoffing his counts with land. These in turn enfeoffed princes and counts who leased it to farmers.

In Hönningen, the farmers had to lease the land to be cultivated from the rulers of Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg for 7–12 years in return for taxes. After the lease expired, the Wildenburg lordship's rentier decided on an extension or a new one. A lease did not automatically pass to the survivor, including a child, when a tenant died. This caused the tenants to migrate from farm to farm. B. A family came to Hönningen via leasehold farms from Obergüdeln - Linden - Schönborn. Another from Friesenhagen via Wippermühle. This was true until the land reform in 1952. Only then could the farmers acquire “their” land. All forest areas, fishing and hunting rights remained the property of the Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg rulership.

In this area, the rule of Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg had mainly the Saxon-Westphalian house built. In this type of house, the barn is separate from the house. In Hönningen the barns were in their own complex at the entrance to the village. In the Saxon-Westphalian house, the entrance is on one gable side and leads over the Ern to the stable on the other side. The doors were split in two. The lower half was usually closed to prevent animals from entering the house. The upper half remained open during the day to let light and air into the house. The upper half was locked at night.

religion

Hönningen and the Wissener Land belonged to the Siegburg deanery since 722 and was predominantly Catholic. Around the year 1000 there was already a Catholic parish in Wissen . The residents had to go to church there on Sundays by order. Birth, baptism, marriage and death had to be reported to the churches, since the churches performed the tasks of today's registry office until the introduction of the “Reich Law for the Notarization of Civil Status” in 1876. A resident of Hönningen became a priest:

  • Augustinus Hombach, Vincentian, born 1879, joined the Mission Congregation in 1899, ordained a priest in 1907, was professor of philosophy and church history at the Archbishop's Seminary in Tegucigalpa from 1910 . From 1923 he was Archbishop of Tegucigalpa. He died under mysterious circumstances in 1933.

education

In the Middle Ages there were only a few schools tied to parishes. It was not until 1589 that school regulations existed that stipulated that as many children as possible should be taught reading, writing and catechism . In 1827 there was a winter school (October to March) in Hönningen with teacher Johann Josef Arns and 15 children. In 1859 a school was built in neighboring Elkhausen and the children received regular lessons all year round.
