The Höytiäinen is a lake in the Finnish countryside North Karelia .
It is located north of Pyhäselkä , the northeasternmost of the Saimaa lakes, in the municipalities of Polvijärvi and Kontiolahti . With a water surface of 282.64 km² it is one of the 20 largest lakes in Finland. The lake is at a height of 87.3 m and has a maximum water depth of 59 m.
At the beginning of the 19th century the lake had an area of over 400 km² and was 9.6 m higher than today. At that time it was planned to gain new agricultural land by lowering the water level in a controlled manner. On August 4, 1859, there was an uncontrolled flooding of the downstream waters. The flow rate that flowed through the Höytiäisen Canal into the neighboring lake Pyhäselkä was about 5000 m³ / s. The water level of the Pyhäselkä rose at times by 2 m. Within the following weeks the water level of the Höytiäinen fell by 7 m. In the following year, even more water was drained, so that the lake reached its present state and lost a total of about 157 km² in area.
