The beginnings of Çetinkaya's playing career are not documented. As the first occupied station he played in the 1972/73 season at the first division club Adanaspor .

After the 1973/74 season remained undocumented, he moved to the first division club Zonguldakspor in the summer of 1975 . At this club Çetinkaya established himself straight away as a regular player. In the 1979/80 season he and his team finished the first division completely surprisingly in third place in the table and thus achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. Çetinkaya was absent for the majority of this season due to injury and played eleven league games. As a defender, he played a part in the fact that his team, with 19 goals conceded, became the team with the fewest goals conceded after champions Trabzonspor . In the next season Çetinkaya consolidated his position within the team again and rose to the national team. His team finished the season in 7th place in the table and lagged behind the previous year's performance. In the 1981/82 season , the team found its way back to its old strength and finished the league in 4th place in the table. This achieved the second-best first division placement in the club's history. Çetinkaya was one of the most important players on his team this season. The following season Çetinkaya's team fell short of expectations and recently even played against relegation.

For the 1983/84 season Çetinkaya left Zonguldakspor after eight years and moved within the league to the South Turkish representative Antalyaspor . With this club he ended his first season with 18 league games. In the second season he rose to become a regular player and rose with his club in the 2nd Futbol Ligi . In the 2nd Turkish league, Çetinkaya's team finished the league as champions and thus managed to gain direct promotion. Promoted to the first division, Çetinkaya played one more season for Antalyaspor. The further course of his career is undocumented.

Çetinkaya's international career began in 1989 with a deployment for the Turkish U-21 national team .
