HN Jacobsen's Bókahandil

HN Jacobsens Bókahandil is the oldest bookstore in the Faroe Islands and is located in the city of Tórshavn . It is also one of the oldest stores in the country.

The bookstore was founded at Ólavsøka on July 29, 1865 by bookbinder Hans Niklái Jacobsen. His son Jakob Jakobsen (1864–1918) is one of the most important Faroese philologists.

Initially, the shop was on Tinganes in the main street Gongin there. In 1918 the old secondary school (since 1861) on the market square Vaglið at the beginning of Niels Finsens gøta was sold and offered the book trade adequate premises.

The old school building is considered to be one of the most charming old houses in the capital. There are large maple trees in the front garden , which is a special attraction on the otherwise almost treeless Faroe Islands. The wooden building itself has a typical Faroese grass roof .

Until 2005, HN Jacobsen's bookstore also had its own printing house with its own publishing house , where many Faroese books were published. The bookshop is still the only second-hand bookshop in the Faroe Islands today . In the meantime, the bookstore has also taken on the function of tourism information.
