Niels Finsens gøta
The Niels Finsens Gøta is the only pedestrian zone on the Faroe Islands . It is located in the center of the capital Tórshavn and is named after the city's most famous son, Niels Ryberg Finsen , the Nobel Prize for Medicine .
The street was laid out around 1900 as Nyvej (Neuweg) and was named shortly after Finsen's death in 1904 .
In the pedestrian zone you will find various shops and the town hall of the municipality of Tórshavn , built in 1894 , the city library and the tourist information office at the southern end. This business center extends to the side streets as well.
At the eastern end is the Vaglið market square with the Løgtings building and the traditional HN Jacobsens Bókhandil . Both the pedestrian zone and the square are the central scene of parades, speeches, concerts and dances for Ólavsøka and other celebrations.
Along the pedestrian zone and on the square there are a number of remarkable sculptures by:
- Hans Pauli Olsen - "Álvagentan", an elf figure after William Heinesen from 2000 and "Traðamaðurin" 1989
