The Versatile Multilayer Disc (VMD) was a digital optical storage medium . With a theoretical capacity of up to 100 gigabytes per disc, it was in competition with HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc and was therefore also known as "HD VMD". Originally it should be able to be read with normal DVD drives and players. For the first VMDs in series, however, separate players should be brought onto the market. The HD VMD Player ML 777 was named as the type designation. Since December 2010 all manufacturer websites are no longer accessible. It appears that all efforts regarding the development of the VMD have been stopped.

The VMD was developed by New Medium Enterprises Inc. (NME), founded in 1999 and based in Nottingham .

Technology and Marketing

Unlike conventional DVDs, the VMD contains more than two layers that are read with the red laser beam familiar from conventional DVD players . The layers are semi-transparent and must be precisely controlled in depth by the laser. In December 2006 NME was able to write and read out up to 10 layers. The first VMDs in series should be able to hold 40 GB. NME developed its own player. Its technology should be made available to hardware manufacturers via license agreements. According to the Dutch manufacturer ODMS, the production costs of VMDs should be 9 cents each. Single-layer DVDs are produced at a unit price of around 6 cents. In contrast to the competing formats HD DVD and Blu-ray, no DRM technology was planned for the VMD .

At IFA 2007, NME presented discs with 15 and 20 GB capacity, which were to be launched in Germany in 2008. In 2007 the market launch was originally supposed to take place in Australia, Iceland, India, Poland and Scandinavia, where the players (180–250 €) were to be bundled with a few films.
