The HVDC close coupling Vyborg , located about nine kilometers east of Vyborg in Russia , is the only high-voltage direct current transmission - short coupling in Russia.

The plant went into operation in 1982 and has a transmission capacity of 1065  MW . At the time, this was the highest transmission capacity of all HVDC close couplings worldwide. It uses three bipolar converters with an operating voltage of 85  kV . In contrast to most other HVDC systems, no bidirectional energy transfer is possible, only from Russia to Finland. Since the synchronous connection of the power grids of the Eastern and Western European countries in 1995, this system has been the only possibility for Russia to export electrical energy to Western countries.
