HMS Achates
Six ships of the British Royal Navy were named HMS Achates after Achates , the companion of Aeneas , a figure in Roman mythology .
- The first HMS Achates was a small 13-gun warship launched in 1573 and sold in 1605.
- The second HMS Achates was a 10-gun sloop that was launched in 1808 and was shipwrecked near Guadeloupe in 1810 .
- The third HMS Achates was a 16-cannon sloop , originally the French Le Milan , which was captured in 1809 and sold in 1818.
- The fourth HMS Achates was a destroyer of Acasta class. It was launched in 1912, took part in the Battle of the Skagerrak in World War I and was sold in 1921.
- The fifth HMS Achates was an A-class destroyer launched in 1929. During the Second World War she sank the French submarine Argonaute near Oran in 1942 , and on December 31, 1942 she was sunk by the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper in the Battle of the Barents Sea .
- The sixth HMS Achates was a submarine of Amphion class was, but not completed, the 1945 was launched. She was sunk near Gibraltar in 1950 as a target ship.
