HMS Endurance

HMS Endurance is the name of two ships in the Royal Navy . Both ships are named after the Endurance , the ship used by Ernest Henry Shackleton on his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914.

  • The first HMS Endurance was purchased in 1967, then served as an Antarctic patrol ship until 1991, when it had to be retired due to severe damage after a collision with an iceberg .
  • The second HMS Endurance , the current Antarctic patrol ship, was purchased in 1992 and has been in service with the Royal Navy ever since.
