The HMS Exeter was a Type 42 destroyer in the Royal Navy . Commissioned in 1980, the Exeter was the last remaining Navy warship that had participated in the Falklands War when it was decommissioned on May 27, 2009 .
history
Originally the Exeter was slated to become another Bristol- class unit as the fifth bearer of her name , but due to changes in military strategy requirements, it was built as a Type 42 destroyer.
The primary task of the Type 42 was the extensive air defense of a group of ships, its secondary tasks were maritime cannon fire support, participation in anti-surface operations and its anti-submarine capabilities. Like these offensive capabilities, the Type 42 was also capable of providing assistance to civil forces, disaster control and similar peacetime tasks to which it was called.
The HMS Exeter was built by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders . The foundation of the keel took place in Neptune Yard, Wallsend, on July 22, 1976. Baptized on April 25, 1978 by Lady Joan Mulley, she was put into service on September 19, 1980.
In the Falklands War in 1982 she earned her sixth Battle Honor under the command of Captain HM Balfour and was again involved in defense activities during the Gulf War in 1991 when she was used as an escort for American combat ships and demining units off the Kuwaiti coast. She has visited most parts of the world, was involved in countless exercises and was transferred to Rosyth Dockyard in 1997 to begin an extensive remodeling program which she completed on September 11, 1998.
