HMS Irresistible

At least four ships of the British Royal Navy were named HMS Irresistible from the English word for "irresistible".

  • The first Irresistible was a third class ship of the line with 74 cannons, which was launched in Harwich in 1782 , u. a. participated in the naval battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797 and was scrapped in 1806.
  • The second Irresistible was also a third class ship of the line with 74 cannons. She was launched in 1787 under the name Swiftsure in Deptford , took part in the naval battle at Abukir in 1798 and had to surrender to the two French liners Indivisible and Dix-Août in 1801 after a losing battle . In 1805 she was recaptured at the Battle of Trafalgar by the British, who renamed her Irresistible , as a new ship called the Swiftsure had already been built. After being used as a prison ship, she was scrapped in Chatham in 1816.
  • The third Irresistible was a third class ship of the line launched in 1860 and sold in 1891.
  • The fourth Irresistible was a battleship of the Formidable-Class , which was launched in 1898 and 1915 in the Battle of Gallipoli sank after a mine hit.
