HTCondor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Htcondor (formerly Condor ) is a so-called batch - software , which in large computer networks is used. Condor is used to gain computing time for numerical calculations by combining workstations into a Condor pool.

history

Condor has been developed and continuously improved at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (USA) since 1988 . At the beginning this software was only developed for Unix , but now Condor can also be installed on Linux , Solaris , Mac OS and Windows . However, there are some Condor features that are only available under UNIX / Linux.

Two versions of Condor are always available, the so-called stable release and the development release. The stable release has been sufficiently tested and should therefore be installed in real Condor pools, while the development release contains new features that have not yet been adequately tested. The development release should only be installed in small test pools.

functionality

A computer or server in the Condor pool must take over the work of the Central Manager. This central manager has the task of administering the pool. The clients form the actual Condor pool. The clients have two tasks. On the one hand they should process the jobs and on the other hand you should be able to send jobs from them.

Condor can be configured in such a way that it only executes jobs if the user has not made any entries for a certain period of time, i.e. the computer is not in use. As soon as mouse or keyboard entries are made again, a running job is stopped and transferred to a possibly free computer.
