A hair tonic is a liquid for the care of the scalp or hair . The basis is usually an alcoholic solution based on ethanol or 2-propanol .

In the cosmetic field, hair tonic, which often contains herbal extracts from birch , for example , is mainly used to style the hair more easily, to refresh it and to perfume it. Medical hair lotions to reduce flaking often contain sulfur , salicylic acid , pyrithione , piroctone olamine or ciclopirox olamine .
