The Hachtor (detention gate) is a listed secular building in Rüthen in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) and the city's landmark.

History and architecture

The Hachtor, built in the 14th century, was part of the city fortifications of Rüthen . It is a very well-preserved building made of Rüthener green sandstone on a square floor plan. The passage is ogival. A round arch niche is located on the inside. Of the four former city gates , the Hachtor is the only one that has survived. Rüthen lies on a ridge and the terrain is mostly flat to the north, so this area was particularly worth protecting. The gate also served as a prison . The main gate and the no longer existing front gate were connected by a drawbridge via the still partially visible fortification moat . The north side of the large gate tower was then secured by a portcullis . The condemned delinquent (often hexene ) was on the way to the place of execution the confession removed.
