Hackelberg and Landau is an Austrian noble family .

history

The noble family came from Upper Austria and later settled in Lower Austria . Jacob Hackelberger appears as the progenitor of the same, in 1488 in the service of Archduke Sigmund of Tyrol, later of Emperor Maximilian I. Several members of this family held higher positions in government and military services.

Karl Hackelberg, Government Councilor, is gloriously remembered for his clever and energetic measures taken in 1683 during the Turkish siege of Vienna to defend and maintain the two quarters across the Danube. In recognition of his services, he received the Reichsfrei- and Panier-Herrenstand in 1688. Karl became the founder of the older line and his brother Gottfried that of the younger line of this family.

The former also took the nickname of Landau, which his cousin Johann Rudolph had acquired through a marriage with a baroness von Landau. From the older line, Joseph Ladislaus was Imperial Colonel in 1711. Rudolph Joseph 1785 Appellate Councilor in Bohemia, 1800 District President in Upper Austria; During his reign of Großperthold in Lower Austria, he built a large glass factory in Hirschenstein.

From the younger line, Johann Rudolph, the son of Gottfried, the founder of the same, acquired the Rottenbach estate, gender name and coat of arms, from the extinct baron family of the Landau, which Emperor Joseph I granted the entire family in 1708.

One of the youngest offspring of this family was Otto Freiherr von Hackelberg-Landau, an imperial naval officer, who died in Smyrna on June 23, 1853.

As one of the baronial families, the family received a hereditary seat in the manor house , the upper house of the Austrian Imperial Council .
