Hadiatou Barry (* 1966 in Leipzig ) is a former German child actress who as the lead actress in a DEFA - children's film has been known.

Life

Barry was born in Leipzig in 1966 as the first child of a German Romance philologist and a chemist from Guinea . Here she grew up with a four years younger brother. One day a friend of her mother's found an ad in a newspaper looking for “African children” to star in a DEFA film. It was the role of Asina in Rolf Losansky 's children's film A Snowman for Africa . The first audition to which Barry was accompanied by her father took place in Leipzig. She was shortlisted and finally prevailed against all other competitors in a second test in Babelsberg .

The shooting of the film took place in 1977 in Babelsberg and Bulgaria . On October 2nd, 1977, A Snowman for Africa premiered in Berlin's Colosseum . The critics praised Barry:

Other critics also found that "the African girl Asina with her 21 pigtails [...] was so enchantingly performed that children immediately and easily accepted her as a figure of identification."

The film became a success and received several awards, including the Children's Jury Prize of Honor in 1979 . In retrospect, Barry admitted that the sudden attention had taken me away: “[T] he attention, the autographs, the admiration at the screenings of the film must have made me feel special. During the many interviews I gave at the time, I had a refined, artificial tone. ”In 1978, Barry's family moved to Hamburg . Barry finished school and went on to study architecture . She has been working as a building surveyor in Hamburg since 2001.

Barry lives with her family in Lüneburg .
