Hadramphus (synonym: Karocolens ) is a genus of four flightless species of beetle from the family of weevils .
Their distribution is limited to New Zealand and some offshore islands. The type species Hadramphus spinipennis was determined in 1911 by Thomas Broun . Hadramphus pittospori was described in 1987 by Guillermo Kuschel within the new genus Karocolens . In 1999 the genus Karocolens was synonymous with the genus Hadramphus by Robin Craw . Hadramphus tuberculatus was described by Francis Polkinghorne Pascoe in 1877 as Lyperobius tuberculatus and transferred to the genus Hadramphus by Kuschel in 1971 . The fourth species Hadramphus stilbocarpae was described by Kuschel in 1971. All four Hadramphus species are relatively large with a body length varying from 11.7 to 23 mm. They are mainly dark brown and characterized by triangular or round tubercles on the top and flanks.
Species and their distribution
- Hadramphus spinipennis occurs in the Chatham Islands .
- Hadramphus stilbocarpae is known from Breaksea Island, Resolution Island and Puysegur Point (in the Fiordland region), the islands of Bird Island and Big South Cape Island in the vicinity of Stewart Island and from the sub-Antarctic Snare Islands .
- Hadramphus pittospori lives on the Poor Knights Islands .
- The New Zealand tuberous weevil ( Hadramphus tuberculatus ) is the rarest Hadramphus species. Its occurrence is restricted to the Burkes Pass Reserve in the Canterbury Plains . It was considered extinct between 1922 and 2004.
