Life

In 1946 Kuschel carried out entomological studies in the Chilean provinces of Tarapacá and Antofagasta . In 1948 he took part in an entomological expedition of the Universidad de Chile in Antofagasta . From 1950 to 1956 he worked as an entomologist in the Faculty of Education at the Universidad de Chile. In 1953 he was awarded a Ph.D. PhD in biology. From 1957 to 1962 he was professor and head of the entomological department at the Zoological Research Center of the Universidad de Chile. In December 1962 he moved to Nelson , New Zealand, where he became a member of the Entomological Institute of the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). In 1974 the institute was moved to Auckland . In 1983, Kuschel retired at the age of 65 and continued his work as a research assistant into old age.

During his tenure at the Universidad de Chile, Kuschel made numerous trips, including two to the Juan Fernández Islands , about which he published 40 articles in the journal Revista Chilena de Entomología between 1952 and 1957 under the title Los insectos de las Islas Juan Fernández . For his contribution to the knowledge of the insect fauna of these islands he received the Linné Medal of the Linnean Society of London . Between March 1953 and March 1954 he studied the weevil collections at several European museums, including in Genoa, Basel, Vienna, Munich, Harderberg, Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Uppsala, Helsinki, Brussels, Paris, London and Oxford.

In 1950 Kuschel was a founding member and until 1955 editor of the journal Revista Chilena de Entomología . From 1950 to 1952 and again in 1956 he was President of the Sociedad Chilena de Entomología.

Kuschel was one of the most active weevil experts of his time. He was interested in the beetle faunas of the southern hemisphere as well as primeval weevils and their classification. He attached particular importance to the correct study and appropriate representation of the structures of the male and female reproductive systems with special consideration of phylogenesis and its use in taxonomy .

Between 1943 and 1991 Kuschel published over 100 specialist articles. By 2003 he had described 152 new genera of beetles.

Private

Kuschel was married to the New Zealand entomologist Beverley Anne Holloway. From this marriage there were two daughters and one son.
