The Port Hedland is a seaport in the Australian state of Western Australia . The port is particularly important for iron ore mining and is one of the largest ports in the world in terms of goods handled.
Goods and transport
Port Hedland is the most important transshipment point in the Pilbara region for iron ore, which is delivered by rail and shipped via the port. The port's annual turnover was 455 million tons in 2015. Iron ore accounts for 98% of exported goods. For 2017 it was expected to be the largest export port for bulk goods in the world.
In the 2014/15 financial year, 2,874 ships called at the port.
Facilities and infrastructure
Port administration
The port is managed by the Port Hedland Port Authority. The Headquarters of the Port Authority as well as the Port Control Tower and the helipad are at Mangrove Point.
In the port area itself, founded in 1991 was Port Hedland Immigration Reception and Processing Center , which for the internment of kambodaschanischen boat people was provided. It was abandoned in 2004; the site and building have been used differently since then.
Ship sizes
The largest vessels that can enter the harbor, are bulk carriers of Wozmax - size .
The maximum dimensions are:
- Length: 330 m
- Load capacity: 250,000 t
Because of a tidal range of 7.4 meters, the largest ships can only enter and leave the port at high tide. Nevertheless, fully loaded ships then have less than a meter of water under the keel.
