A port captain is an official who is responsible for ship movements, safety and nautical administration in a large port .

The English-language name is Harbourmaster or Captain of the Port . The associated authority is called the Port Authority .

Port captain are called z. B. the heads of the Hamburg Oberhafenamt and the Hanseatic City of Bremen Port Authority . As an official title, the term has been partially abolished.

In smaller ports, the positions of the port captain or port master are classified differently.

In naval bases there is a military port captain.
