Hagelslag (lit. "Hagelschlag") is a Dutch sandwich made from chocolate or colored sugar . Sprinkles can directly from the packaging on one with butter smeared bread or other pastries are scattered. The chocolate grains are mostly called Schokostreusel in German .

According to Dutch law, only Hagelslag with at least 32% cocoa may be called chocoladehagelslag ; to a lesser extent it is called cacaofantasie . Due to the lower cocoa and higher sugar content, the grains melt worse.

Manufacturer

The Dutch company Venz started manufacturing Hagelslag in 1936, for which special machines had to be developed.

Notoriety

Hagelslag is one of the most famous Dutch bread toppings . Outside of the Netherlands , Belgium and the former Dutch colonies of Indonesia and Suriname, it is mostly only offered as a decoration for decorating cakes or desserts.

Due to its proximity to the Netherlands, Hagelslag is known as a bread topping, especially in north-west Germany.
