geology

The underground of the gorge consists of soft sandstone , in which even smaller streams are easily buried. Because of the softness of the rock, there are few permanent rock cliffs in the gorge, as newly formed cliffs collapse very quickly. That is why most of the gorge is bordered by steep, overgrown slopes. In some places, namely where the sandstone is a little harder, you can also see sandstone cliffs.

Hike

A well-developed hiking trail leads through the gorge. At the upper end of the gorge there are restaurants in the districts of Hintersdorf and Unterkirchbach in the municipality of Sankt Andrä-Wierter. The entrance to the gorge is about a kilometer south of Sankt Andrä and can be reached on foot, by bus or by car.

At the upper end of the gorge (Unterkirchbach) there is a bird of prey breeding station with around 300 birds of prey (30 species of birds). From April to November you can observe 30 different species of birds and take guided tours on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The pre-alpine long-distance hiking trail and the Great Tullnerfeld circular hiking trail lead through the gorge . Geocachers will find several puzzles and caches along the gorge.
