The Hai Lung class is a submarine class of the Republic of China Navy .

history

The Taiwan government ordered two submarines from the Netherlands in 1981. These should essentially be based on the Dutch Zwaardvis class , which in turn were a copy of the American Barbel class . Both boats, called Hai Lung (Sea Dragon) and Chien Lung (Sea Tiger), were laid down at Wilton-Fijenoord in Schiedam , the Netherlands , in December 1982 . After financial problems at the shipyard, construction did not begin until 1983. At the end of 1986, both boats were launched and, after test drives in the North Sea, were brought to Taiwan by ship. There the boats were put into service in 1987 and 1988.

In 1992, the Netherlands refused to build and sell two more boats in the class plus two options after the People's Republic of China protested the deal.
