The Hai Van Tunnel is the longest tunnel in Southeast Asia at 6.28 km . It crosses under the Cloud Pass ( Hai Van Pass) and connects the Vietnamese cities of Huế and Đà Nẵng via State Road 1 .

Planning and design

The planning and design phase began in January 1998. Planning and design were carried out by a joint venture between the Nippon Koei Company (Japan), Louis Berger International Inc. (USA) and the Vietnamese Transport Engineering Design Corporation (TEDI).

Construction work

The construction work was mainly carried out by a Vietnamese-Japanese joint venture Hazama-Cienco 6 and a joint venture between the Korean company Dong Ah and the Vietnamese Song Da Construction .

The main tunnel has a diameter of 11.9 m. A second tunnel tube running parallel to the main tunnel is currently being used for maintenance and safety purposes. A later expansion to a traffic tunnel is being planned. Both tubes are connected by 15 branch tunnels. The tunnels are equipped with fire alarm, communication, water supply and ventilation systems.

The maintenance and safety tube is also to be widened as a full-fledged tunnel tube.

The tunnel was officially opened on June 5, 2005.

The main tunnel currently has only one lane in each direction. A transit fee of VND 25,000 is charged for cars and minibuses . Motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians are not permitted to drive through / through. From November 2006 there will be a 24-hour shuttle service. The prices for this are as follows: VND 12,000 for motorcycles, VND 5,000 for bicycles and VND 3,000 per person.

At both exits there is a small waiting area where visitors can take photos and an exhibition about the tunnel construction.

The tunnel shortens the distance between Da Nang and Huế by 20 km. This results in a time saving of half an hour to an hour compared to the old route over the Hai Van Pass .
