Veverská Bítýška (German Eichhorn Bittischka ) is a city in the Czech Republic . It is located 15 kilometers northwest of the city center of Brno and belongs to the Okres Brno-venkov .
geography
The place is located in the Eichhorn basin (Veverskobítýšská kotlina) at the confluence of the Bílý potok , also known as Bítýška , in the Svratka . To the east of Veverská Bítýška, the reservoir of the Brno Dam (Brněnská přehrada) ends, above which the Veveří Castle towers in the southeast, already in the Brno city area . The state road 386 from the D 1 motorway to Kuřim runs through Veverská Bítýška .
Neighboring towns are Heroltice and Sentice in the north, Chudčice in the northeast, Nový Dvůr in the southeast, Hvozdec in the south and Holasice and Lažánky in the west.
history
The settlement originated from the Veveří Castle, which has been documented since 1213, and is closely linked to its history. It is believed that the castle and settlement were built in the 12th century. However, documentary evidence about the place de Bytysch has only existed since 1376. In the Hussite Wars, the settlement was destroyed by the lord of the castle in 1428 and later rebuilt. Bittischka has been known as a market since 1475. During the Thirty Years War the Swedes burned Bittitschka down in 1645. In the area there was mining for iron ores. In 1717 an iron hammer was built in the Bítýška valley .
The most famous owner of the castle and market was Gustav of Sweden from 1830 to 1844 . In 1860 the ironworks ceased operations. In 1880 1700 people lived in the market. In 1910 the place had 1,840 inhabitants, of whom 1,832 were Czechs.
Veverská Bítýška received a railway connection in 1911 through the private local railway Gurein – Bittischka-Eichhorn . As early as 1936 the local railway was closed again for economic reasons. The originally planned new construction of the main line Brno – Havlíčkův Brod through the Svratka valley was abandoned in the 1930s because of excessive costs. This route was then moved further east in the 1950s.
Since the completion of the Brno Dam in 1940, Veverská Bítýška has become a magnet for summer visitors from Brno. On September 24th, 2008 the status as Městys was renewed. On August 27, 2018, Veverská Bítýška received city status.
