history

Place view

The first written mention of the village took place on November 11, 1289, when Dietrich von Kněžice left the priesthood of the Premonstratensian in Knieschitz as patron of the church in Moravany . After the Lords of Knieschitz, the von Schwabenitz family followed as owners of the village. After 1300 a German settlement began and the originally resident Czechs were assimilated over time. In the middle of the 14th century, the Cistercian monastery Aula Sanctae Mariae in Old Brno acquired the place. On May 23, 1645, Morbes was plundered during the Swedish siege of Brno. In the hoof register of 1673 43 farms are shown for Morbes. In 1758 a fire destroyed parts of the village and it also seized the church. After the Maria Saal monastery was abolished in the course of the Josephine reforms in 1782, Morbes was administered by the religion fund. After that, the goods were sold to secular owners. In 1788 the New Mill was built on the Obrawa (Bobrava). The last feudal landlords were the princes Schönburg-Hartenstein until 1849 .

After the abolition of patrimonial Morbes / Moravany formed from 1850 a municipality in the district administration Brno. The village formed the southern Brno language island with Czernowitz, Kumrowitz, Maxdorf, Mödritz , Nennowitz, Ober Gerspitz, Priesenitz, Schöllschitz and Unter Gerspitz . During the German War , Morbes was occupied by the Prussians after the Battle of Königgrätz in 1866. They brought in cholera , from which 37 residents died.

After the establishment of Czechoslovakia , the municipality was assigned to the Okres Brno-venkov in 1921. In 1929 the settlement of Morbes Neudorf / Moravany-Nová Ves was established on the northern periphery. The established German-speaking residents tried unsuccessfully to prevent the establishment of this settlement. Ultimately, twelve Czech families were settled there.

Františka Tomková (1875–1922), who lived in the village, was a lover of the writer Petr Bezruč . The "German House" was built on the village square in 1931 and is now used as a cultural center. In the 1940s, the Wroclaw-Vienna Reichsautobahn was to be built west of Morbes . However, this section was never realized. After the tank battle of Groß Urhau on April 24, 1945, the Red Army conquered the area. After the end of the Second World War, the German population was expelled on June 1st as part of the Brno death march . One German, 14 mixed-language and three Czech families remained in the village. Between 1948 and 1960 the municipality belonged to the Okres Brno-okolí. After its cancellation, Moravany came back to Okres Brno-venkov. Moravany municipality has had a coat of arms and a banner since 1993.
