Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou ( Greek Στέλιος Χατζηιωάννου - Stélios Chatziioánnou ) (born February 14, 1967 in Athens , Greece ) is a British entrepreneur who works from London.

He grew up as the son of a very wealthy Greek Cypriot shipowner family. After graduating from the London School of Economics and Cass Business School in London, he began setting up his own businesses. He became best known for the founding of Europe's second low-cost airline, Easyjet , in 1995. Easyjet is still the core of Haji-Ioannou's rapidly growing corporate empire. With the Easy brand , Haji-Ioannou is now trying to make everything "cheap" - flights, hotel rooms, cruises, loans. Today Haji-Ioannou lives in Monaco . His net worth is estimated at 1.072 billion euros (£ 727 million).

On June 17, 2006, Haji-Ioannou was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II as part of The Queen's 80th birthday honors list .

Haji-Ioannou resigned from the Easyjet Board of Directors in May 2010 with immediate effect. The reason he gave was that he did not agree with the company's expansion strategy and wanted to concentrate entirely on the role of shareholder.

criticism

Haji-Ioannou came under fire when a VLCC-class oil tanker operated by his shipping company , the M / T Haven , exploded off Genoa in 1991 and sank three days later. Six members of the crew died in the accident and 50,000 tons of crude oil spilled into the sea, causing the largest oil spill in the Mediterranean to date . He and his father, Lucas Haji-Ioannou , were accused of negligence in the poor condition of the ship and of bribery, extortion and intimidation of witnesses during the trial. He and his father were acquitted of all allegations in 2002 despite sharp criticism from the Italian Ministry of the Environment, the WWF and the ITF in a third instance.
