Haji Nasrullah Baryalai Arsalai (born March 3, 1958 ) is an Afghan politician who ran for the 2009 presidential election in Afghanistan.

Life

Haji Nasrullah Baryalai Arsalai is the son of the former district administrator Amanullah Khan Arsalai. He is a Pashtun from the Ahmadzai Jabarkhel tribe. Baryalai Arsalai grew up in different regions of Afghanistan as the father's place of administration changed often. Nasrullah Baryalai Arsalai finished his education in 1974 in Jalalabad . He then studied agriculture at the University of Nangarhar. Due to the political situation in Afghanistan and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, he fled into exile in 1981. In Germany he learned the German language at the University of Marburg and took part in further training courses in English and journalism. His brothers Abdul Haq and Abdul Qadir were mujahideen commanders who fought against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan from 1980 to 1989. The prominent freedom fighter and commander Abdul Haq was murdered by the Taliban in October 2001 . Haji Abdul Qadir was the governor of Nangarhar from 1992 to 1996 and after the Taliban rule from 2001 until he was assassinated on July 6, 2002. He was also the vice president of Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. The eldest brother, Haji Din Mohammad, is the incumbent governor of Kabul . Nasrullah Baryalai Arsalai finally fled to Germany in 1994 with the beginnings of the Taliban government and returned to Afghanistan on October 26, 2001, when his brother and best friend Abdul Haq was murdered.

From 1980 onwards, Haji Nasrullah Baryalai actively participated in the resistance against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. He supported and organized the resistance movements with his brother Haji Abdul Haq. He led political activities in Europe that supported the freedom struggle against the Soviets. In 1989 he took part in the Rawalpindi Shura as a member of parliament to discuss the provisional mujahideen government. From 1989 to 1992 he worked closely with his brother Haji Abdul Haq in Peshawar. He headed Abdul Haq's resistance front and published a weekly follow-up on political and military developments. He regulated the maintenance of contacts with the diplomats and the Afghan people. Nasrullah Baryalai Arsalai headed the Eastern Afghan Liaison Office in Peshawar from 1993 to 1994. It was an Afghan initiative to provide humanitarian aid in eastern Afghanistan. After returning to Afghanistan in 2001, he set up the Abdul Haq Foundation. This foundation should promote Haji Abdul Haq's idea of ​​a peaceful, independent and enlightened Afghanistan. Important tasks of the Abdul Haq Foundation are building schools and carrying out political dialogues. In 2002 he established a monthly newspaper ("Afghan Yawwalay", German for "Afghan Unity").

From 2002 to 2009 he was the main organizer of the Afghan People's Council, Shura (Wolesi Mashvurati Shura). The Shura is a movement of the people in Nangarhar and eastern Afghanistan. A major success of the Shura is the adoption and signing of the Basic Law in Eastern Afghanistan (2003). Other significant achievements include facilitating recruitment for the Afghan National Army and stopping opium cultivation in eastern Afghanistan.

From 2002 to 2009 he worked on twinned town relations between San Diego (USA) and Jalalabad. He also supports the partnership between the Universities of Nangarhar and San Diego.
