Hajin ( Arabic هجين, DMG Haǧīn ) is a city in eastern Syria . It belongs to the al-Bukamal district in Deir ez-Zor governorate . It is located on the left side of the Euphrates near the Iraqi-Syrian border .

The city came under IS control in July 2013 . In November 2017, IS fighters retreated here after the fall of Ar-Raqqa . In November 2018 , their number was estimated at 2000 fighters. They were besieged by units of the Syrian Democratic Forces . The city was the last under IS control. In mid-December 2018, the units of the SDF entered the city and the place was finally abandoned by IS on December 14th. The US President Donald Trump declared IS defeated on December 19, 2018, which caused criticism from allies because the IS had control over other small villages and towns east of the city.
