Half-breeds

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Half-Breeds , actually the name of the descendants of the mixing of French-Canadian men and Indian women (see Bois-Brulés ), then the name of a faction of the Republican Party in the United States that opposed Conkling's influence and objected to Grant's re-election in 1880 .

The then US President James A. Garfield was more inclined to the Half-Breeds than to their opponents, the Stalwarts . When Secretary Charles J. Folger was nominated for governor of New York in September 1882 , the Half-Breeds abstained, after which Stephen Grover Cleveland was elected.

In 1890 the two factions of the Half-Breeds and Stalwarts were reunited.
