The stalwarts ( Engl. Solid, strong, brave) were a group of conservative American Republicans , in the late 19th century, the policy of the United States affected.

Well-known members of this faction of the Republican Party were Roscoe Conkling , Thomas C. Platt , Angus Cameron and Chester A. Arthur . The group opposed the reformist Half-Breeds ; the only objective contradictions, however, were less in questions of content than in the exploitation of clusters ( patronage system ). Chester A. Arthur was Vice President under James A. Garfield and then became President of the United States. In this office, however, he followed Garfield's reform approaches, which he viewed as a legacy.
