Half Moon Bay (Bay, California)
Half Moon Bay is a bay that opens to the south and west on the Pacific Ocean in San Mateo County in the US state of California . It is located about 30 kilometers south of San Francisco on the west coast of the San Francisco Peninsula. The bay is roughly crescent-shaped and hence got its name.
At its northern end is El Granada , at the southern end the city of Half Moon Bay . The Cabrillo Highway , California State Route 1 , runs along the bay . Two small rivers, the Frenchmans Creek and the Leon Arroyo, flow into the bay.
Because of its long and wide sandy beach, Half Moon Bay is very popular with bathers and day-trippers. At the far end of the small Pillar Point peninsula , which borders the bay to the north, is a popular surfing spot , the Mavericks . Due to the special shape of the seabed, the waves break particularly high there. After strong winter storms, the breakers here regularly reach heights of 7.5 meters and peak values of 25 meters. The Mavericks are therefore known as a big wave spot.
