Halina Birenbaum (born September 15, 1929 in Warsaw as Halina Grynsztejn ) is an Israeli writer and translator .

Life

Halina Birenbaum was born to Jakub Grynsztejn and Pola Grynsztejn (née Kijewska, widowed Perl) and grew up with two older brothers. After the German invasion of Poland , her family had to move to the Warsaw ghetto . After its destruction it was in July 1943 - with a stop in the concentration camp Majdanek in the - Auschwitz-Birkenau deported. After its dissolution, she was taken to the Ravensbrück concentration camp in January 1945 and to the Neustadt-Glewe concentration camp in February . There she was liberated by the Red Army on May 2, 1945 . Her mother was murdered in Majdanek, her father inTreblinka extermination camp .

In 1947 Birenbaum emigrated to Israel. Until the marriage in 1950 she worked in a kibbutz . Halina Birenbaum is married to Chaim Birenbaum and has two sons.

Literary work

Life and death during the occupation, the martyrdom of the Polish Jews in the ghettos and in the concentration camps form the main themes of Halina Birenbaum's prose and poetry. Her books, written partly in Polish and partly in Hebrew, have been translated into German, English, French, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. She conveys her experience of the Holocaust in numerous readings and at meetings with young people in Israel and Europe.
