Haliplus apicalis , syn. H. striatus is a beetle from the family of water treaders (Haliplidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 2 to 3 millimeters. Their body is elongated oval and rusty yellow to rusty red in color. The wings are broadest behind the shoulders, but gradually tapered towards the rear. They have black stripes on the rows of dots which, unlike the similar Haliplus fluviatilis, are not clearly interrupted. These stripes are seldom widened and flow into one another, there are no horizontal flaws. The outer wings of the male are shiny and smooth at the base, the rear half of the females are very finely shagreened and therefore not shiny. The prosternal process between the hips of the forelegs is flat. The prothorax is also flat.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in northern and central Europe. The southern limit of distribution runs through Germany, Austria and Hungary. The animals live especially on the seashore in pools with brackish water.
