Thymus mastichina is a plant type from the genus of thyme ( Thymus ) in the family of Labiatae .

description

Thymus mastichina is an upright plant 20 to 50 cm high. The leaves are in clusters in the armpits of the stems . They are 8 to 10 mm long and 2 to 3 mm wide. They are narrowly ovate to elliptical-lanceolate and often more or less finely notched. They are tomentose or almost hairless and not ciliate at the base.

The inflorescences are mostly almost spherical and measure 10 to 20 mm in diameter. The bracts resemble the leaves and are greenish. The calyx is 4 to 6 mm long, the upper teeth are 2 to 3 mm long, all teeth are long ciliate, so that the inflorescence has a somewhat feathery appearance. The crown is whitish, the corolla tube protrudes slightly over the cup.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Systematics

Within the genus of the thyme ( thymus ), the species is classified in the Mastichina section .

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Thymus mastichina subsp. donyanae R.Morales : It occurs from southern Portugal to southwestern Spain.
  • Thymus mastichina subsp. mastichina : It occurs in Portugal and Spain.

Occurrence and use

The species is common in Spain and Portugal . In Spain and Argentina , Thymus mastichina is grown and used as a condiment.
