It was explored in 1964 by a team working in the Allan Hills as part of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Program . This she named after the Swedish palaeobotanist and geologist Thore Gustaf Halle (1884-1964), who had studied the plant fossils discovered during the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901-1903) , the analysis of which was added to the scientific report of the research trip in 1913.
