Halobacterium salinarum is a halophilic rod-shaped archaeon belonging to the genus Halobacterium . It only grows at saline concentrations of 20% to 30%, which corresponds to the saturation concentration. It was firstisolatedon salted clipfish as an impurity. It is found naturally in salt pans , whichare colored characteristically redby carotenoids in the cells of H. salinarium . H. salinarium cellscan even survive in salt crystals. If the sodium chlorideconcentrationfalls below 1 molar , the proteins that have been adapted to high salt concentrations begin to denature . Living cells are mobile. When exposed to light, H. salinarium generates ATP through bacteriorhodopsin , which is used, among other things, for locomotion. A ship's propeller-shaped archaellum provides the propulsion.
