Halon extinguishing system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Halon extinguishing system is a permanently installed system that works with Halon (mostly Halon 1301 , rarely Halon 1211 ) as the extinguishing agent . The systems were mainly used in the 1960s and 1970s where technical equipment would have been destroyed by conventional extinguishing with water , foam or powder .

advantages

Halon is an extinguishing agent with a high extinguishing effect and can be stored in small quantities. In addition, in its original state (decomposition products, which arise especially in ember fires, can have a harmful effect), it does not pose a threat to people.

disadvantage

Halons belong to the group of CFCs , which damage the ozone layer , and when extinguishing with halon, corrosive reaction products can arise.

Regulations

In 1987 the most important industrialized countries decided to gradually discontinue the production and use of the ozone-depleting halon. Halon-powered extinguishing devices have been banned in the EU since 2004 . They have been replaced by natural or chemical extinguishing agents or by fine water spray systems. Halon is only permitted as an extinguishing agent in exceptional cases for military applications and in aviation.
