The Hamada Hirosuke Memorial “Mahoroba Fairy Tale Land” ( Japanese ま ほ ろ ば ・ 童話 の 里 浜 田 広 介 記念 館 , Mahoroba Dōwa no Sato: Hamada Hirosuke Kinenkan ) was built in Takahata in honor of the Japanese author of books for children and young people, Hirosuke Hamada . The Hamada Hirosuke Memorial is a non-profit foundation that is run and managed as a public-private partnership .

Overview

The memorial includes various buildings that are located in a small park, the Hirosuke Garden. The main building houses exhibition rooms, a sales stand and a tea corner. Works and exhibits from Hirosuke's estate can be seen in the exhibition rooms. Hirosuke's fairy tales are not only on display as a book version, but also as a film and radio play that are suitable for children. Here, visitors also have access to around 3000 volumes of children's and young people's literature. Next to it is the round Hirosuke Hall, which is used as an all-purpose hall for conferences, film screenings and events and which holds around 200 people. Hirosuke's birthplace, which stands next to the hall, is a single-storey wooden house with a thatched roof in the Nōka style , which was built at the end of the Edo period . Hirosuke lived in this house from birth until he entered Yonezawa Middle School. The building was moved to the memorial site in 2000. In the garden in front of the Hirosuke Hall there is also a stone statue of a “weeping red devil” ( 泣 い た 赤 お に , Naita Aka- Oni ), which is reminiscent of Hirosuke's work of the same name.

The tasks of the memorial are according to §3 of the statutes:

  • the storage, utilization and collection of materials on youth literature and on Hamada Hirosuke
  • examining and researching materials on youth literature and Hamada Hirosuke
  • To offer events and courses on children's and youth literature
  • To preserve Hirosuke's birthplace and to guarantee public accessibility.
