Hamburgö is an island in the Swedish municipality of Tanum in the province of Västra Götalands län . The island is separated from the mainland by a sound that is only 50 meters wide at its narrowest point. Hamburgö is about 4 km long in north-south direction and an average of 1.5 km wide. The island used to be called Hornbora ("the one who wore horns"). It is believed that the name refers to two prominent peninsulas at the southern end of the island.

In the north-eastern part of the island there are parts of the hamlet of Hamburgsund , which continues on the mainland. The traffic connection is via a cable ferry .

The first houses on the island were probably built at the beginning of the 16th century in connection with the periodic herring flooding . It is believed that the first settlers settled on the west side. In the middle of the 16th century a customs post was established at the northern end of the sound . Today the place is called Tollbue.
