Hamburg Council Music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hamburger Ratsmusik was the name of an official musical establishment in Hamburg of the Baroque . At that time, the north German merchant town managed an ensemble under the motto "Honor God and Hamburg for pleasure, delight and benefit" that was to be on par with the court bands customary in southern Germany; It was also important to show that the bourgeoisie could definitely take on the feudal system when it comes to promoting art. There were similar ensembles in other German cities, including Lübeck . Council music was a general expression that was intended to distinguish this music, promoted by the councilors, from house music, the bourgeois music-making at home.

The name "Hamburger Ratsmusik" has meanwhile been recorded in Hamburg by an ensemble working in the field of early music led by the viol player Simone Eckert . In addition, the Ensemble Hespèrion XX has published various pieces by William Brade under this title , composed between 1609 and 1614 in Hamburg and Lübeck .
