Hamburg Symposium on Blood Coagulation 1969 in the lecture hall of the Surgical Clinic of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf

The Hamburg Symposium on Blood Coagulation was a scientific conference on all aspects of hemostaseology held regularly in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg from 1954 to 2006 by doctors, researchers and university lecturers . The event always took place on the Friday and Saturday after Corpus Christi in the lecture hall of the Surgical Clinic of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . A symposium volume with the lectures and discussions collected was published for each conference. The volumes were initially published by Georg Thieme Verlag and later by Schattauer Verlag . Over a period of more than 50 years, the Hamburg Symposium on Blood Coagulation was the most renowned scientific conference in Europe on blood coagulation research, which was reflected in particular in the large number of foreign participants.

founding

The Hamburg symposium on blood coagulation was founded by the German doctor and hematologist Rudolf Juergens . From the beginning he was able to win the German Hoffmann-La Roche AG in Grenzach-Wyhlen for long-term support.

intention

In the foreword to the first volume of the symposium, Rudolf Jürgens wrote in 1954 about the necessity and intention of the symposium:

“The modern insights of research and clinics force a decision to be made. A symposium was called at the beginning of the year in the University Hospital Eppendorf in order to loosen the tensions that have arisen from the results of modern research and the traditional therapeutic ideas and to exchange experiences at the bedside […]. The symposium fulfilled its purpose with presentations on the experimental research results and with corresponding clinical reports on what was experienced at the bedside. "

As chairman of the fourth symposium, Ludwig Zukschwerdt wrote in 1961 about the “justification” and significance of the Hamburg conference:

“Experience has shown that both at the large congresses of the specialist societies for clinical subjects and at the small congresses, only the spotlights can be cast on the relevant problems. But what the person specifically dealing with these questions would like to have is a discussion with researchers who have a lot of experience. But this must go beyond the scope of a congress of a clinical specialty. "

Rudolf Juergens Memorial Medal

Starting in 1967, the chairmen of the Hamburg Symposium on Blood Coagulation awarded the Rudolf-Jürgens-Gedenk-Medal at irregular intervals as an award for outstanding services to blood coagulation research. The prize was donated by Hoffmann La Roche AG . Prize winners included Heinz Köstering , Max-Hermann Hörder (1980), Hanns-Gotthard Lasch , Michael Fischer and Rüdiger Eberhard Scharf (1997).
