Hamburg Environmental Institute
The Hamburger Umweltinstitut e. V. (HUI) is a non-profit association from Hamburg for the scientific processing of environmental topics . Based on the experience of various scientific disciplines, the institute aims to promote practicable ecological solutions.
The institute was founded in 1989 by Michael Braungart and Monika Griefahn . It is supported by donations and voluntary work by experts.
The most influential and long-term projects are
- the project " nutrient recovery through biomass " for wastewater treatment in tropical and subtropical regions (since 1990),
- the “Top50 project” for evaluating the environmental behavior of the world's 50 largest chemical and pharmaceutical companies (since 1992) and
- the “Primitive Product Design” project on chemicals - outgassing from complex everyday products.
